In 2007, the Tabloid Witch Awards went international. We'd received foreign entries in past years -- from Canada, England, Germany, Hungary, and Taiwan -- but they always lost to the more numerous American entries. However, in 2007, four foreign films won Tabloid Witches; two film from Canada, one from a New Zealand/English team, and one from Argentina!

Once again, the winners were announced in October.

Twice as many films were honored than in the previous year (fourteen, up from seven), and the number of trophies awarded increased from 14 to 23.

New award categories included Best Visual Effects and Best Make-Up Effects. The Best Horror Short Film was split into three short film categories: Dramatic Horror, Comedic Horror, and Animated Horror.

Yet despite these new categories, many excellent horror films "lost." There are just so many filmmakers out there, working in the horror genre, it's extremely competitive.

The Tabloid Witch trophy itself was upgraded, from the lucite starburst to a purple brass plaque.

All the winning films received two screenings: a Premiere screening at the Santa Monica Public Library on the weekend before Halloween, at their beautiful Martin Luther King Jr. Auditorium; and an Encore screening at Loscon 34 the following Thanksgiving Day weekend.

As in 2005, Loscon provided an attractive, hotel ballroom venue, on a Saturday night, scheduled opposite their Masquerade Ball. With fourteen Tabloid Witch Award winning films (plus a "special guest screening" from the Viscera Series), the screening lasted from 8 pm till 3 in the morning, with a break for Q&A.

There'd also been a Q&A at the SMPL. CJ Johnson, Paul Solet, Yfke van Berckelaer, and actress Elizabeth Mouton (representing Dead Noon) were among the library's Q&A participants. John Faust, Nancy Sinclair, and Shawna Baca participated at Loscon. Erasmo Romero III participated in both.(After he learned he'd won, Romero also produced this short news segment about the Tabloid Witch Awards!)

Unfortunately, none of our foreign winners could make it to the U.S. to accept their trophies. But the team behind Death Knows Your Name did send this video "thank you" card from Buenos Aries!

The Tabloid Witch is proud recognize the best in horror talent from around the world!
